Proceedings:

Old Business:
No old business to report.

New Business:
IRS Approval of Tax Exemption

On November 12, 2008 Metro West Foundation received tax-exempt status as a public charity.  There is a five-year government test period to monitor the Foundation’s financial activity.  Tracy Hoekstra will post the Foundation’s tax-exempt number on the Metro West webpage.

Fundraising “To Do’s” Now and Future:

Toni explained that at least two-thirds of the Foundation’s revenue needs to come from public money, not grants.  With the award of the $5000 Fiddle Foundation Grant, the Foundation needs to raise $10,000 in private donations.  Ideas for future fundraising include:

Preholiday Gift Bazaar (November)
Children’s artwork Fundraiser (October)
“In Memory” gifts
Solicitation of funds by board members
Creation of brochure and CD-ROM explaining Foundation’s mission

New Space Update
Metro West hopes expand into the space next door by the end of 2009.  The bid for renovation came in under budget.  This space, partially funded by the Fiddle Foundation Grant, will be used create a teen room and foster independence among kids 14 and up.

Other Business:
The Steve Johnson New York Marathon Fundraiser

Toni Merfeld announced she would be speaking at Steve Johnson’s September 25th fundraiser.  This event supports Steve’s participation with Team Autism Speaks at the New York Marathon.

Metro West Foundation Name
Several board members indicated that they thought the Metro West Foundation needed a new name.  There was discussion that the similarities between the name Metro West Kids and Metro West Foundation could create confusion amongst donors who might think they were supporting a corporation instead of a non profit.  Board members were asked to submit ideas for a new Foundation name.

Volunteering Opportunities

The following Board members generously volunteered to support the Foundation by:

Organizing the holiday gift bazaar – Dawn Musgrove
Looking into a children’s craft fundraiser – Dawn Musgrove and Tracy Hoekstra
Providing art ideas for the Foundation’s brochure – Jodie Sevier Yon
Nominating a new name  and creating a logo for the Foundation – Jean Fox
Nominating a new name for the Foundation and make inquiries at Drake regarding students compiling the fundraising CD-ROM – Tracy Hoekstra
Asking Zach if he would like his 4H project highlighted on the fundraising CD-ROM – Michele Vermillion

Next Meeting:
Toni announced that the next meeting of the Foundation would be scheduled for mid- to late September.

A motion to adjourn was introduced and unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Our daughter has benefited so much from attending Club CLUE.  It has been helpful to have friends that are "safe" and understand the nature of her disability.  She has come out of her shell at school, too.  We're thrilled that she is branching out and going to school dances and other social functions, and we know that
Club CLUE has played a large part in giving her the confidence and skills to take this major step.
